Precision steel pipes refer to steel tubes characterized by extremely tight dimensional tolerances and high surface brightness. Precision tubes must offer excellent mechanical properties and structural stability. For specific applications, they are engineered to provide high strength-to-weight ratios and superior internal cleanliness.
Precision steel pipes include cold-drawn and cold-rolled varieties. They are predominantly manufactured through secondary cold processing to achieve precise specifications; standard hot-rolled pipes are generally not applicable where high dimensional accuracy is mandatory.
It has been widely used in hydraulic system tubing, shock absorber cylinders, automotive fuel injection systems, precision mechanical shafts, medical equipment, high-pressure gas springs, etc.
Types of Precision Steel Tubes
Cold Drawn Seamless Precision Tube (CDS) Cold-drawn seamless is a type of precision tube produced by pulling a solid steel hollow through a die at room temperature. The intense pressure of the drawing process refines the grain structure, resulting in a tube with superior structural integrity and a smooth, scale-free surface. CDS tubes are preferred in critical applications such as high-pressure hydraulic cylinders and aerospace components due to their seamless construction and high tensile strength.
Cold Drawn Welded Precision Tube (DOM) Cold-drawn welded (often referred to as DOM - Drawn Over Mandrel) is a type of precision tube where a high-quality welded tube is cold-drawn through a die and over a mandrel. This specialized process eliminates the internal weld seam and significantly improves concentricity and wall uniformity. In smaller mechanical assemblies, DOM tubes provide a cost-effective alternative to seamless, while larger utility structures rely on the excellent dimensional consistency of welded precision tubes for steering columns and structural frames. High-precision welded tube: The refined material then undergoes final bright annealing to ensure ductility for complex bending and flaring.
Precision Pipe Manufacturing Methods
The manufacturing method for high-precision seamless steel pipes involves secondary cold processing based on high-quality seamless mother tubes. The following key manufacturing processes ensure superior dimensional accuracy and surface quality:
Cold Drawing, Cold Rolling (Pilgering), Bright Annealing, Fine Polishing, Surface Passivation.
Heat Treatment Methods Applied in Precision Pipes
Heat treatment is the critical method for defining the final delivery condition and mechanical properties of precision steel pipes. By controlled heating and cooling, we optimize the microstructure to achieve specific tensile strength, elongation, and surface brightness. The desired mechanical states (such as BK, BKW, BKS, GBK, NBK) are obtained through precise thermal cycles.
1. Quenching (Hardening) Hardening, also called quenching, involves heating the precision steel pipe uniformly to the austenitizing temperature, then rapidly immersing it in a protective cooling medium (oil or specialized polymer) for rapid cooling. This process grants the high-precision tube the necessary structural hardness and strength for high-load mechanical applications.
2. Tempering Precision steel pipes may exhibit internal stresses after hardening. The tempering method is applied to eliminate this brittleness and stabilize the dimensions. While the absolute hardness is slightly modulated, the toughness is significantly increased, ensuring the tube can withstand precision machining and bending without fracture.
3. Annealing (Bright Annealing) Annealing is the primary method to eliminate internal stress and achieve high ductility. For precision tubes, we utilize Bright Annealing in a controlled protective atmosphere (Oxygen-free) to heat the tubes to the critical temperature, followed by slow cooling. This ensures the surface remains bright, smooth, and free of oxide scale.
We produce all sizes of precision tubes according to European (EN 10305), German (DIN 2391), American (ASTM A519), and Japanese (JIS) standards. With optimized production cycles, we ensure fast delivery and supportive payment terms. All precision tube processes are strictly monitored. With 100% inspection before delivery, we also welcome third-party inspections (SGS, TUV, BV) to verify compliance.
Hydrostatic Test: Every individual precision pipe is subject to hydrostatic testing to ensure structural integrity. The standard test pressure is maintained up to 20 MPa. Under this pressure, stabilization must be held for at least 10 seconds without any sign of leakage or deformation.
With technical agreement, the hydraulic test can be replaced by high-sensitivity Eddy Current Testing (ECT) or Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) testing to protect the internal surface cleanliness.
Nondestructive Test (NDT): For high-demand mechanical applications, tubes are subject to 100% Ultrasonic Testing (UT). Other specialized non-destructive methods can be added upon contractual request to ensure zero internal defects.
Flattening Test: Tubes with an outer diameter greater than 22 mm shall undergo a flattening test. No visible delamination, cracks, or surface impurities should occur during the entire deformation experiment.
Hardness Test: For high-strength grades such as 4130, 4140, E355, or ST52, Brinell, Vickers, or Rockwell hardness tests are performed on specimens from each production lot to ensure metallurgical uniformity.
Bend Test: For precision pipes where the diameter-to-wall thickness ratio is 7.0 or less, a bend test is conducted in place of the flattening test. This verifies the material’s ability to withstand complex cold-forming and flaring operations without structural failure.
Precision tubes require superior surface protection. We employ specialized methods to prevent oxidation and ensure security during sea transportation. Our packaging is designed to maintain the "Bright" finish of the tubes:
